It was a pivotal moment when the CEO of a startup, grappling with a string of disappointing hiring decisions, had a profound realization. Despite his rigorous interviews and impressive resumes, his unconscious biases were steering his choices. He had been favouring candidates who mirrored his personality, inadvertently overlooking the diverse experiences that could enrich his team. This awakening marked a significant turning point in his leadership journey.
With a resolute determination to change, the CEO embarked on a journey of self-discovery. He began to make more conscious decisions, actively challenging his ingrained biases. This proactive shift in approach not only fostered a culture of inclusivity and growth but also transformed his leadership and the company’s overall trajectory.
Based on Carl Jung: My Top Five Reflections on this Engagement.
Carl Jung's teaching on "Embracing the Power of the Unconscious" stands as a cornerstone for effective leadership. The unconscious mind exerts a powerful influence on our decisions, often shaping them without our full awareness. Leaders who confront and bring these hidden forces to light can make more deliberate and ethical choices, which drive success by aligning their actions with deeply held values and objectives.
Equally important is the practice of "Unmasking the Persona and Embracing the Shadow." Leaders often present a public persona that aligns with societal expectations or professional norms. However, this can lead to inauthenticity if the shadow—those hidden and usually darker aspects of ourselves—remains ignored. Ignoring the shadow creates blind spots that can undermine a leader’s effectiveness. By integrating the persona and the shadow, leaders build deeper trust within their teams and lead more authentically.
The journey of "Individuation" represents another critical aspect of leadership development. This process involves peeling away the layers of societal expectations and external pressures to uncover and embrace one’s authentic leadership potential. Leaders who commit to the journey of individuation find greater personal fulfillment and inspire their teams to pursue and develop their unique potential.
"Self-reflection" remains critical for continuous improvement in leadership. Leaders who regularly assess their actions, motivations, and decisions ensure alignment with their core values and the organization’s mission. This practice enhances emotional intelligence, enabling leaders to navigate complex situations more clearly and effectively.
Finally, "Seeking Balance in All Aspects of Life" sustains leadership over the long term. A balanced leader nurtures all facets of their being—mental, emotional, and physical—thereby preventing burnout and maintaining a healthy work-life equilibrium. Leaders create a solid foundation for long-term personal and professional success by striving for balance.
The CEO's reflection on this engagement is a testament to the transformative power of self-awareness. For me, it is confirmation that leaders must confront unconscious biases to make ethical, informed, and authentic decisions. This introspection has been critical in his personal and professional growth - and mine.
