International Women's Day has always been a struggle for me. Recognizing the complexity of women's rights, the generations of struggle, and the awkward conversations of today, I decided to forgo the usual celebrations. Instead, I am reaching into the past to reflect on the life of an incredibly influential woman, yet many of us do not know—Florence Scovel Shinn.

Florence Scovel Shinn

Florence Scovel Shinn was born in 1871 and died in 1940. During those years, her pioneering work in the realm of self-help and personal development made her a beacon of the New Thought movement. An ideology that champions the transformative power of positive thinking, self-belief, and the practice of affirming one's power.

Living through an era marked by significant societal change yet constrained by traditional gender roles, Florence Scovel Shinn defied the odds to leave an indelible mark on the world. The early 20th century was a period of great challenge and opportunity for women; it saw the suffrage movement's triumph with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, granting women the right to vote. Despite these advancements, societal expectations continued to limit women's roles and professional opportunities.

The Game of Life and How to Play It

Against this backdrop, Shinn's achievements as an author, especially with her seminal work, "The Game of Life and How to Play It," published in 1925, were extraordinary. Her book delved into the concept that one could change one's life and manifest one's desires through positive thinking and creative visualization. Shinn's teachings, which emphasized the spiritual laws of prosperity and success, offered spiritual guidance and practical advice, making her wisdom accessible to many.

As we celebrate International Women's Day, Florence Scovel Shinn's legacy reminds us of women's significant strides against societal barriers. Her success is a testament to what women can achieve, regardless of their era. Shinn's work has paved the way for countless individuals seeking to improve their lives, influencing the self-help genre and resonating with readers even decades after her passing.

Her influence can be seen in the works of many contemporary self-help authors, positioning her as a pioneer whose ideas predate and laid the groundwork for modern discussions around the law of attraction and the power of affirmations. Shinn's story exemplifies the resilience and capability of women to lead, inspire change, and contribute to our collective well-being and knowledge.

On this International Women's Day, let us honour Florence Scovel Shinn's enduring legacy, celebrating her contributions to personal development and her role as a symbol of women's empowerment. Her life and work serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one can make by believing in oneself and transcending society's limitations. Shinn's legacy is a beacon for all, demonstrating the timeless relevance of her teachings in empowering individuals to navigate life's challenges with confidence and faith in their abilities.
